LESTER PIGGOTT TO RIDE FOR QUEEN
LICENCE RETURNED AFTER 103-DAY SUSPENSION (N.Z, Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, October 4. Lester Piggott, aged 18, was yesterday appointed to succeed Sir Gordon Richards as first jockey to Noel Murles’s stable. The young rider, who only last week was returned his licence after a 103-day suspension, will begin riding for Queen Elizabeth on October 6. “The Times” said that most of the Queen’s horses were trained by Captain Boyd-Rochfort, and runners from that stable would continue to be ridden by W. H. Carr. The newspaper stated, however, ’hat Piggott would wear the Royal colours several times next season, because he Queen has sent all the horses she leased from the National Stud to Murles’s. Piggott now holds a “number one" job in race riding, and could be sure of * 10,000 yearly, according to the “Daily Sketch." A few months ago, the Jockey Club suspended him for his riding of Never Say Die. In four days’ racing since he regained his licence, Piggott has ridden three winners.
