PRINCE CORTAULD BEATEN

Connaught Wins At Randwick GENDARME FAILS IN STAKES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 4. Connaught saved bookmakers a very big payout when he beat the hot favourite, the New Zealand-owned and bred Prince Cortauld, by a "half length in the Epsom Handicap at Randwick today. Another New Zealand horse, Tesla, finished a length and three-quarters away, third. Prince Cortauld was backed for a fortune straight out, and coupled with all fancied runners in the Metropolitan for large amounts. Sellwood rode a perfect race on Prince Cortauld. He kept him on the rails until well into the straight, where several runners were in front of him. He had no chance of getting a run, and had to pull the favourite very wide. Half-way down the straight. Prince Cortauld, in the middle of the track, looked like succeeding; but Connaught shot through on the rails to win decisively. Tesla gave a remarkable display to finish third. He was last on settling down and his jockey, W. Cook, did not make a move on him until the entrance to the straight. Tesla, in a long-sustained run, beat Krakatoa for third place. Gendarme Beaten The Metropolitan favourite, Gendarme, starting at 5 to 4 on for the Colin Stephen Stakes, was outstayed by Advocate in a thrilling finish. The New Zealand horse. Earldom, was third. Gendarme’s trial for next Saturday’s big race was disappointing. A furlong from home he looked to have Advocate beaten, but from then on Advocate was doing much better. The Melbourne jockey, W. Williamson, took the gamble of taking Advocate to the front to lead all the way. Gendarme closed on Advocate at the top of the straight, but was unable to overhaul him in a desperate run to the judge. A New Zealand horse, Commodore, caused a big upset in the Squatters’ Handicap, when he finished brilliantly to beat Belshazzar by half a length, with the favourite, Master Proven, half a neck away, third. The muddling pace did not suit Master Proven, which did not lose any Metropolitan admirers. Results:— GIMCRACK STAKES, Of £2OOO. Two-year-old fillies. Five furlongs. ULTRA BLUE 8-5 .. .. W.
