CHARGES OF TREASON

Police Search In Paris (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) PARIS, October 4. Counter-espionage officers are searching for a new man of mystery said to have played a part in the leakage of French defence secrets to the Communist Party. He was named “Monsieur Charles” by Andre Baranes, the Communist journalist and police informer, who yesterday became the fourth man charged with treason in the security scandal. The military judge investigating the case is understood to want to interview Mr Joseph Laniel, who was Prime Minister at the time of the alleged leakages from the Defence Council occurred. Baranes, who has confessed to. having passed secrets, said that “Monsieur Charles” sometimes acted as his intermediary. The “mystery man” is said to be a former police official who was sentenced to 18 years at hard labour for-war-time collaboration. Baranes is alleged to have received secret documents from Rene Turpin and Roger La Brusse, key officials of the National Defence Council. Like Baranes, they are charged with an offence against the external security of the State.
