4 EXACT REQUIREMENTS DISCUSSED A great deal of uncertainty exists as to the exact requirements of a protective hat for motor-cyclists. In order to clarify the position, and place some facts before the public, we submit the following extracts from the British Standards Institute B.S. 2001, as printed in the “Motor Cycle.” The distinctive mark of the British Standards Institute is a triangle over two half-circles, and is known as the “kite” mark. It is a guarantee that the hat carrying it meets the requirements of the Institution.* Extract: “The hat shall have a smooth exterior. Any strengthening ribs must not rise above three-six-teenths of an inch and must be fully radiused and smooth. A minimum gap of five-eighths of an inch must exist between harness and hat, whose external dimensions from base to crown shall not be less than four-and-a-half inches. The hat shall not exceed 20oz m weight. “The hat shell material shall be nonbnttle and waterproof without any surface coating, and shall include a strong chin strap to hold helmet/ in place m event of a crash. Any peak must be of pliable material. “The harness shall be made of nonelastic material securely fastened to the shell. The head-band shall be well cushioned by sponge rubber or equivalent. The drawthread shall have 701 b tensile strength. Under test, the hat must sustain, without breaking or deflecting, the impact of a 41b solid iron sphere dropped from four feet. The hat must sustain 301 b crushing force at brim with a maximum allowance of one and a quarter inch deformatlon - Under moisture test, the hat must, after seven hours’ continuous wetting from a rose spray, immediately meet all requirements as before. In addition, all test requirements must be met when surface temperature of hat is 120 plus five degrees F su /P en ded by its harness ehin strap, the hat must sustain an applied load of 801 b without damage to harness or its attachment to the shell.
