Newspaper Attacks Eden’s Offer
(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, October 1. Under the heading: “This Disastrous Blunder,” the “Daily Express” said in a leading article today: ‘ Mr Eden gives Europe a pledge which he calls formidable. It is more than formidable. It is perilous. It may be deadly. . . . “Mr Eden has turned his back on sound principles. He has done what his predecessors always shrank from doing. ... “No pledge is given by Canada, and certainly there will be neither Australian nor New Zealand soldiers standing beside Britain’s troops in Germany.” . The British Government is facmg a crisis over the call-up of national servicemen also, according to the “Daily Express.” Mr Eden’s pledge made it virtually certain that no cut in the call-up could be planned in the foreseeable future. Conservative as well as Labour opposition to the retention of the twoyear national service period was growing, claimed the newspaper.
