GOVERNMENT RETAINS SEAT (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 30. The Government retained Croydon East in the Parliamentary by-election today. ■ x ' Voting in the three-cornered contest resulted:— Vice-Admiral John HughesHallet (Conservative) .. 21,640 James Wellwood (Labour) .. 13,546 James Walters (Liberal) . ■ 3,060
Conservative majority .. 8,094 In the 1951 General Election. Sir Herbert Williamson (who died recently) won the seat for the Conservatives by 9667 votes in a straight fight against Labour. The figures were: Conservatives 32,282 and Labour 22,615.
