“LIBERATION” OF FORMOSA
An “Urgent Combat Mission” (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) HONG KONG, Oct. 1. The first. Defence Minister of Communist China (Mr Peng Tehhuai) declared at a mammoth parade in Peking today, celebrating China’s national day, that “the liberation of Formosa was a sacred task for the People’s Liberation Army.” Mr Peng said: “We must t strengthen our efforts to liberate our people who are now enslaved by Chiang Kai-shek and his traitorous band and the United States imperialists. We will not rest until Formosa is freed.” Facing units of the People’s Liberation Army, which he had just reviewed, Mr Peng ordered the troops to prepare themselves for an “urgent combat mission.” He said: “Our struggle to liberate Formosa is righteous, and we . believe we shall attain victory. We must liberate Formosa in order to ensure peace in the Far East as well as in Asia.”
