ROAD DEATHS

TWENTY IN N.Z. LAST

MONTH (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 1. The number of road deaths in NewZealand last month was 16 fewer than in August. Those killed last month, with the figures for August in parenthesis, were classified as follows:—drivers and passengers, 5 (11); pedestrians. 7 (11); cyclists, 1 (8); motor-cyclists and power-cyclists, 7 (6); total, 20 (36). Of the 20 deaths last morith. 12 were at the week-ends, which statistics for many months back show to be the most dangerous days on the roads. Deaths on New Zealand roads in the first nine months of 1954 totalled 247 (in 231 accidents), compared with 238 deaths (218 accidents) in the Janu-ary-September period of 1953.
