AUCKLAND EPIDEMIC OF INFLUENZA
AVERAGE OF 640 CASES A WEEK (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 14. Influenza of a fairly severe type is prevalent in Auckland, and an average of 640 cases a week occurred last month. This was reported today by the District Medical Officer of Health (Dr. A. W. S. Thompson), who said that in August there were also nearly 400 cases a week of inflammation of the middle ear. * Medical authorities, he said, were not unduly worried —a high incidence of these diseases could be expected at this time of the year. The present type of influenza was characterised by a feverish sore throat, with headaches and depression. Tonsillitis, inflammation of the throat, and colds in the head were also prevalent. Dr. Thompson said this type of influenza was highly infectious. Influenza reached its peak in the first week of August, with 830 cases. Last year, it was most prevalent in November, when a weekly average of 1279 cases was reported.
