British Army Tests New Rifle
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, September 2. Field tests of the Belgian F.N. .30 self-loading rifle are to begin immediately at the Small Arms School at Hythe in Kent. This is the rifle with which the British Army is to be rearmed.
It is the Anny’s first automatic Complete battalions will get the rifle for initial trials, and there will later be demonstrations in Germany, Kenya, the Middle East and the Far East.
The Navy, the Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force will make the tests in various theatres. . The "Dally Telegraph" says extensive trials are necessary so that soldiers can become familiar with the working parts of the weapon which can fire either a single shot or automatically. It is understood that the automatic rate is 650 or 700 rounds a minute.
