South Africa to Free Imports Next Year

(Rec. 7 p.m.) PRETORIA, Aug. 31. South Africa’s Minister of Economic Affairs (Mr Eric Louw) today predicted the abolition of South African import controls by the middle of 1956. Mr Louw, opening the Northern Transvaal Industrial Exhibition and trade fair at Pretoria, said that the increase in South Africa’s exports—with increased production of gold and uranium—made her position less vulnerable in the event of an economic recession abroad. South Africa’s economy had been kept on an even keel; commercial turnovers had been maintained at a satisfactory level and »ew industries had been established since currency control was introd”aed in 1948 and import control in 1949, he said.
