BUSINESSMEN ASKED TO DO OWN DOG-CATCHING
"The Press" Special Service
KAIKOHE, September 1. The Kaikohe Borough Council will ask Chamber of Commerce members to take a day off and round up stray flogs. The resolution, moved by Cr. J. I. Vipond, was carried unanimously in answer to the chamber’s letter of complaint about wandering dogs in Kaikohe. The resolution also suggested that, having caught all the stray dogs, Chamber of Commerce members could hand them over to the borough foreman for impounding. Wandering dogs have worried Kaikohe businessmen for a number of years. About three years ago impounding kennels were built, but the borough foreman found that catching the dogs was too much of a problem and they have been allowed to roam.
Cr. N. G. Moffatt said he viewed the resolution with alarm. Where,’ he asked, could all the dogs be impounded? The building housing the kennels was packed to file doors with equipment.
“Royal tour materials,” remarked Cr. D. W. Thorpe. Cr. CR E. Knightley: Let the Chamber of Commerce bring them all in. We will study the impounding question when the dogs arrive. If the worst somes to the worst, we can stack the materials in this board room. Cr. Moffatt: The chamber might call our bluff. Cr. Knightley: Let them. It would be a happy day for all of us if all the wandering dogs were brought in. The Mayor (Mr H. F. Guy) said the law allowed unregistered dogs to be shot on sight.
