RANFURLY SHIELD

Sir, —Although the provincial Rugby union holding the Ranfurly Shield is inclined to commercialise it, it certainly makes the players keen and produces some good football; and what a great money-spinner it is, when one considers that in the four matches played so far, some £12,000 has been taken. Seeing that the union is now so financial, I would dike to make the suggestion, for the benefit of the players who make this position possible, that the union should .start an insurance for injury or accident fund. Only just recently we had the case of the late Colin Bailey, who died from injuries; and his mates had to provide a Sunday benefit match played at Sumner, at which £3OO was collected for his widow.—-Yours, etc., S. W. HICKMOTT. September 1, 1954.
