NEW ZEALAND MEN’S SINGLES QUARTER-FINALS REACHED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 1. The fifth-seeded J. Armstrong (Canterbury) was eliminated in the fourth round of 4he men’s singles at the New Zealand table tennis championships tonight. He was beaten by K. J. D. Lindsay (Auckland), 21-17, 28-18, 13-21. 21-11. All the other seeded players reached the quarter-finals, and all had comfortable wins in the fourth round except B. D. P. Williamson (Canterbury), who was extender by an Auckland junior, G. L. Cox. Williamson won. 16-21, 21-14, 21-15. 22-20. Cox led 18-12 in the fourth set. but threw away points. Armstrong was no match for Lindsay, whose counter-hitting with a sponge rubber bat dictated the trend of the game. The title-holder, R. V. Jackson (Auckland), eliminated E. J. Sigley (Wellington), 21-11, 21-15, 21-19. In the other fourth-round matches, W. O. Jaine (Auckland) and J. S. Crossley (Wellington) had little trouble against I. L. Houghton (Wellington) and R. A. Taylor (Wellington). Two rounds of the women’s singles were decided, and eight seeded came through without much trouble.
