COMPENSATION OF WORKERS

OPPOSITION AMENDMENT DEFEATED (New Zealand Preu Auociation) WELLINGTON, September 1. Division bells rang in the House of Representatives today for the first time this session, when a vote was taken on an Opposition amendment to the Workers’ Compensation Bill. It was moved by Mr A. McLagan (Opposition, Riccarton), who sought the addition of a clause whereby workers making a final settlement after compensation rates had been increased, but who had been injured before the increase, should get the benefit of the higher rate. The amendment was lost by 37 votes to 22.

The Minister of Labour (Mr-W. Sullivan) said he could not accept the proposition- contained in the amendment without giving it some consideration. He was trying to get a consolidation of the workers’ compensation legislation for next session. That would give interested parties an opportunity to make representations. He would ’carefully examine the point raised by Mr McLagan before that consolidation. Mr McLagan said he could not accept the suggestion of another 12 months’ delay. After further discussion Mr McLagan moved his amendment, and the division was taken.
