NEW POLICE SUBDISTRICT
SERGEANT APPOINTED TO PAPANUI
The growth of the Papanui and Islington districts has necessitated the formation of a police sub-district at Papanui. This station will now be in the charge oi a sergeant, who will have with him two constable. Applications for the position of sergeant at the station closed recently, and it was announced yesterday by the Superintendent of Police at Christchurch (Mr D. R. Sugrue) that Sergeant E. C. T. Broadley was the successful applicant. The growth of the Papanui district can be gauged from the fact that until about three years ago only one constable was stationed there. Then another constable was appointed, and these two have been in charge oi the district since that time. Mr Sugrue said yesterday that with the establishment of the new subdistrict at Papanui, the boundaries of some other districts would be altered. The alterations would mainly concern Islington, which had also grown rapidly. The area around the Harewood airport, formerly controlled from Islington, would become a part of the Papanui sub-district. The taking of this area from the Islington district would enable the constable at Islington to devote more time to Hornby township, which was also becoming densely populated. Sergeant Broadley is well known to Papanui residents, having lived in this suburb while stationed in Christchurch. He was transferred to Greymouth several years ago, and is at present serving at Foxton. It has not yet ben decided when he will take up his new appointment
