N.Z. DEMAND FOR FURS

RECESSION REPORTED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31. New Zealanders have been spending about £650,000 a year on fur goods, but it seems that along with world trends, the demand is falling. Figures of New Zealand production and imports of fur goods were given to the Board of Trade today in a report by the Department of Industries and Comfnerce. The board is * holding an inquiry into import duties on fur goods. In 1938, consumers paid at least £429,000 for fur gopds (95.6 per cent. New Zealand manufacture). A peak value of £731,000 was reached in 1951. The department reported that according to one prominent New Zealand manufacturer, there had been a recession in the fur trade in such countries as the United States, Britain and Australia, as well as in New Zealand.
