At what age should a child begin music lessons? This is a question often asked Miss Nancy Martin, music tutor to the Regional Council of Adult Education for Victoria College, Wellington. While Miss Martin usually recommends eight to nine years, she does so hoping that some other important questions can be answered satisfactorily. She lists them as follows: What do you mean by music lessons? What is the child’s musical background? Does the child want to learn or do you (his parent) want him to learn? What do you expect his lessons will do for him? Who is the prospective teacher? Above all a child should be ready and anxious to learn an instrument of his own choice. Readiness implied having a background of hearing, seeing and being in some way associated with people who played various instruments.
