A day of drab matches stirred little enthusiasm in the United States lawn tennis singles championships here today, but a five-set match in which Tom Brown, a seeded American, narrowly escaped defeat was one of the few highlights. Brown beat Fred Kovaleski. of Washington, in a two-hour match, 4-6, 6-1, 8-6, 4-6, 6-4, but the result could easily have been the other way. The Sole representatives from Australia and New Zealand in the women's championship, Mrs Nell Hopman and Miss Patricia Longton, met in the first round today. Mrs Hopman, wife of the manager of the Australian team, and the fourth seeded foreigner, was too steady for Miss Longton, a Nunneley Casket player from Wellington, and won 6-4. 6-1. . Miss Longton is working her way round the world, taking in as many tournaments as possible on the way. The opening day was fixed for September 11.
