Jury Indicts 59 In Phenix City
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) PHENIX CITY. Aug. 30. A special grand jury indicted 59 persons on 545 counts today after three weeks of investigation into vice and crime in Phenix City, Alabama. Three murder indictments were among those handed down. But so far, apparently, the jury had not prepared charges in connexion with the assassination last June of Mr Albert Patterson, an anti-vice crusader, who was killed after he had been nominated Attorney-General. The killing touched off the investigation. The names of those indicted were kept secret, under Alabama law, pending their arrests, but, one of the first arrested was E. L. (“Red”) Cook, accused of a murder four years ago in a Phenix City gambling den. The jury reported that its preliminary work had been a study of gambling. “We, as citizens of Russell County, regret and blush to report that we are convinced from the evidence that this diabolical enterprise was deep-rooted and of many years duration in this locality,” the report said.
