SMART SAVE OF COOKHOUSE

OUTBREAK OF FIRE AT ASHLEY FOREST

The prompt action of employees of the New Zealand Forest Service saved a cookhouse at Ashley forest from serious damage last week. Heat from a steel flue set fire to woodwork in the roof and ceiling of the building. The buildings overseer, Mr A. Hill, who happened to be passing, noticed smoke rising from the roof, and quickly brought a hose to bear on the outside of the roof. Mr R. Martin, an assistant forester, took another lead of hose inside the building. Breaking through the ceiling of the cookhouse, he was able to direct water on to the seat of the fire. Two or three other workmen also helped the two officers. As a result of the prompt action of these men, said the Conservator of Forests, Mr L. H. Eailey, yesterday, damage to the building, which with its contents would be worth well over £3OOO, had been slight. . Water caused some disorganisation in the cookhouse and until it could be brought back into operation about 40 men were taken to Rangiora for meals.
