PETITION PRESENTED TO HOUSE

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31. Two petitions, carrying in all 2766 signatures, presented to Parliament today seek a reintroduction of subsidies and stricter price control. The prayers of the petitions are identical. One is signed by T. Redmond, assistant general secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants and 2203 others, Rnd the other by R. G. Maxwell and 561 others, all members of the society. The petitions, presented to the House of Representatives by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash), ask that subsidies be reintroduced on essential consumer goods to allow reductions in retail prices; that strict price control be applied to such goods and services as are not subject to subsidies to prevent unwarranted price increases; that the Price Tribunal be reconstituted to include a representative from the trade union movement; and that all applications for price increases be held in public.
