ISLANDERS HONOUR MIDWIFE
54 YEARS’ SERVICE ON PITCAIRN
On a holiday of prayer, song and feasting, on August 4, Pitcairn Islanders honoured the presentation of the British Empire Medal to Mrs Lily Warren. She has been the island’s midwife for 54 years, and was the first resident to, receive an award in the Queen’s New Year honours. It was requested that a special occasion be set aside for the presentation of the medal. A church service in the morning, organised by Pastor N. A. Ferris and. the education officer, Mr /5. Allen, was attended by the whole community. Special items were given by St. John Ambulance, Red Cross Society and Mothers’ League groups and by school children. Pastor Ferris, in his address, drew a parallel with the life of service of Florence Nightingale. A feast was held in the Courthouse and this was followed by films, games and demonstrations. Details of the day’s celebrations are being sent to the Colonial Office. London, at the Queen’s request.
