SCHOLARSHIP IN JOURNALISM

STUDY OF IRRIGATION IN AUSTRALIA The Robert Bell travelling scholarship in journalism has been awarded by the Canterbury University College Council to Mr M. R. Craighead, a member of the staff of “The Press,” Christchurch. He proposes to visit Australia and study newspaper organisation, together with aspects of primary production. The scholarship specifies that the holder should observe overseas irrigation. tree planting, and improved methods of agriculture which may be of interest to the farming community of the Ashburton county and afterwards contribute articles to the "Ashburton Guardian,” which Mr Bell formerly owned. Mr Craighead attended the Christchurch Boys' High School where he was captain of athletics and still holds the school mile record. He then entered the Royal New Zealand Air Fottpe as a physical education instructor and during that period won the Canterbury junior 440 and 880 yards championships and the senior mile and three-mile events. He was also New Zealand University cross-country champion. Mr Craighead has been on the advertising staff of "The Press” for eight years. He completed the diploma of journalism last year after part-time study at Canterbury University College.
