Thrte Australians won their matches . in the United States national tennis singles championship here today. Lewis Hoad, the top-seeded overseas player, beat Sidney Schwartz after a shaky start in a second-round match. The Australian had drawn a first round bye. _ Rex Hartwig and Kenneth Rosewall won their first-round matches. Two other impressive winners were the 1953 champion, Tony Trabert, the United States Davis Cup player, and Lennart Bergelin. of Sweden. Trabert, with a first-round bye, qualified for the third round with a 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 win against Hubert Eaton, the second male negro in the championship. He gave a flawless exhibition of paralysing power and pinpoint accuracy. Bergelin was a superb tennis artist in fluently stroking his way to a 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 first round win against Andrew Stern, of Philadelphia. Results:— First Round.—Ken Rosewall (Australia) beat Edgar Lee (United States). 6-1, 6-1.
