RACING New Dates For N.Z. Cup Meeting At Riccarton

. Subject to + he approval of the Minister of Internal Affairs and the New Zealand Racing Conference, the Canterbury Jockey Club will-hold its New Zealand Cup meeting this year on Saturday, October 30, Saturday, November 6, and Wednesday, November 10. These new dates are being sought because November 13, the date originally held by the club for the last day of the meeting, is the day of the General Election. The rearrangement of dates has been made possible through the Banks Peninsula Racing Club agreeing to hold its spring meeting at Motukarara on October 23 instead of October 30.

“The Canterbury Jockey Club was placed in a most difficult position over its cup meeting dates because of the decision to hold the General Election on November 13,” said Mr G. H. Grigg, chairman of the committee of the club, yesterday. “On being approached by representatives of the Canterbury Jockey Club the committee of the Banks Peninsula club unanimously agreed to the change of dates, and this decision is greatly appreciated by the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club.” Advice For Jockey J. M. Cappie was questioned about his handling of King’s Lace after the Trial Stakes at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday. He was advised by the stipendiary steward, Mr H. Lorigan, to use more vigour in future. King’s Lace, the second favourite, finished in the middle of the field. Trials Cancelled The apprentice trials, which were to have been staged by the Canterbury Jockey Club at Motukarara on Thursday, have been cancelled. It was decided to cancel them after the track was inspected yesterday. The ground was found to be soft after recent heavy rain, and galloping on it would cause considerable I damage. Two-Year-Olds at Ellerslie In a two-year-old parade staged iat the Pakuranga Hunt meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday, Omapere, a brown con by Hello Peter from a Salmagundi mare, Sally Horner, created a good impreession by outclassing his opposition. Omapere. was in front after a few strides, and he ended the run over two furlongs and a half 10 lengths clear of Jack’s Count and a brown gelding by Foxbridge from Pinocle, which shared second placing. Omapere looked very forward. He is raced by Mr E. S. Henderson, and trained at Ellerslie by H. Moore. Jack’s Count is a brown colt by Count Rendered from the Baffles mare, Gold Thread, and is owned by Mr J. H. Pohlen, for whom he is trained by R. G. Stenning, at Ellerslie. The Foxbridge-Pinocle gelding is one of H. H. Riley’s Takanini team. He “being prepared for Mr L. R. Allen. Omapere’s time was 36sec. Oklahoma in Form Ten-year-old Oklahoma proved a class above his opponents in the £IJSO Pakuranga Hunt Cup Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday. Galloping strongly into the lead when the field • ~a J™ 1 * to travel, Oklahoma quickly had the others struggling in his wake. He went further ahead after jumping the last fence, about a furlong from the finish, and continued °? unchallenged to finish well clear of Silver Blue, with Peter Ora a close third. The Pakuranga Hunt Cup was Oklahoma’s third attempt over Ellerslie country for as many wins. The winner’s share of the stake on Saturday was £lOOO and a gold cup valued at £5O, and this brought Oklahoma’s earnings to £10.510. K Since he was taken over by Mr M. N. Bradanovich and trained as a jumper, Oklahoma has won eight races

and £8645. When raced by Mr D. H. Blackie earlier in his career, he won £1865. A tough gelding, with little in the way of looks to recommend him, Oklahoma was bred in the South Island by Mr C. A. Steven. -By Siegfried from a Song Bird mare. Island Linnet, he is a half-brother to Florida, another very successful winter performer raced by Mr Blackie. English Purchases for N.Z. Three English yearlings, purchased at the Newmarket Second July Sales, will arrive in New Zealand shortly. These youngsters, two colts and a filly, were bought by Mr W. Fisher, owner of the Ra Ora Stud, near Auckland, who recently returned from overseas. Now two-year-olds by New Zealand rating, the horses will join K. J. Heaton’s stable at Ellerslie. The filly, named Her Ladyship, is a bay by Pink Flower from a Frenchbred mare, Dulce 11, and traces back to the Amphion mare, Amor a (16). Dulce H won three races and finished second in the 1935 French One Thousand Guineas. To date, she has bred four winners, including Mehmany, the winner of five races and rated second to the Oaks winner, Steady Aim, among the three-year-old fillies of 1946. Dulce Il’s dam, Dorina. 'won the French Oaks in 1926. She was by Asterus, seven times the leading sire of brood mares in France. The two colts, which are chestnuts, both trace in the female line to the famous mare, Chelandry, which won the One Thousand Quineas in 1897, and ran second in the Oaks and St. Leger. One is by Rockefella from Chatterbox, by the Derby winner, Point I’Eveque, and traces to the Rosicrucian mare, Dluminata (1). There have been many fine performers from this family, including the Derby winners. Never Say Die, Ladas and Cicero. The other colt is one of the first crop of the young stallion, Mossborough, which won five races in England, including the. Ascot Churchill Stakes, and was second in the Eclipse Stakes. Mossborough is by Nearco, and his dam. All Moonshine, is a threequarter sister to Hyperion. The dam of this colt is Auricula, a third daughter of Popingaol, which won two races and bred 11 winners of £55,922 10s. Two-year-olds at Wingatui Several two-year-olds which will probably start on their racing careers at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting next month were sprintea down the straight after the first race at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting at Wingatui on Saturday. The best impression was made by Prince Filou, a half-brother to the Great Northern Hurdles winner, Paul. This Le Filou colt showed to beat Ben Led! (Callander-Loyal Lady), Persia (Khorassan-Fyxen) and three others in the first division, one for colts and geldings. Prince Filou cost D. D. Fea, Winton, 400gns at the national sales last January. He is trained by R. P. Lcngford, a brother of the successful jockey, B, J. Langford. First home in the second division was Mr R. M. Walker’s bay gelding by Cassock from Edeforte. This youngester is trained by H. A. Anderton. Second to the Cassock gelding was Jollishah, which will race in the same colours as Mijiji, those of the Riverton owner-trainer M. Corkery. Jollishah is a grey colt by Pherozshah from Jolly. Only two fillies paraded, but one by Callander from Spouse made a good impression when she ran a Cassock filly to a head after losing a lot of ground at the start. The Callander filly will be raced by Mr J. M. Samson and is in F. T. Anning*s Wingatui team. The Cassock filly is out of Our Maureen and is trained by H A. Anderton for Mr R. T. PoweU.
