Sir,—Both O. M. Brundall and “Consistency” miss my main point—that it is illogical to defend democracy (e.g., by larger military forces) by undemocratic means (e.g., by using Cyprus,‘an island annexed by Britain, 80 per cent, of whose inhabitants wish not to be ruled by Britain but to be united to Greece). O. M. Brundall, anyhow, will agree that the worst enemies of Christianity are not nonChristians but the poor Christian behaviour. of many professing Christians. So the worst enemies of democracy are not the/ non-democrats but the un-
democratic behaviour of professing democrats. I suggest that O. M. Brundall alter his phrase “at all costs” to “at all costs consistent with democratic principles,” and that" “Consistency” should regard it as a democrat’s bounden duty “to be perturbed about” the inhabitants of any country whose fundamental right to self-government is being violated by his own country. —Yours, etc., N.
