SEAMAN DROWNED AT WESTPORT

FALL FROM GANGWAY INTO RIVER (From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, August 21. A seaman on the collier Kaitangata was drowned when he slipped while walking up the ship's gangway and fell into the Buller river about 9 p.m. yes* terday. He was George B. Scott, single, aged abbut 35. Another member of the crew heard the splash as Mr Scott hit the water, but it was not until 10 p.m. that Sergeant C. H. Davis and Constable R. Osmond, who had carried out dragging operations, recovered the body. Mr Scott was born in Scotland, and it is understood he has no relatives in New Zealand. Be joined the vessel at Auckland. An inquest for identification purposes was opened in Westport this morning, and adjourned sine die.

DRIVER KILLED

BODY PINNED BENEATH TRUCK (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 22. A man died in the Auckland Hospital on Saturday mpming after suffering abdominal injuries in an accident jbA an intersection at Swanson about 130 a.rfi. the same day. He was: Frederick Roy Ash, aged 40, a farmer, married, with three children, of Bethell’s Beach. A passenger in Mr Ash’s truck, Lewis Shaw, aged 71, also of Bethell’s Beach, was treated at the casualty department of the Auckland Hospital for minor'abrasions. The truck was found lying on its side by Mr John Brown, who had been attracted by the sound of a horn sounding continuously. He stopped a south-bound freight train from Whangarei, and with the help of the train crew lifted the truck off Mr Ash. who was pinned' underneath it

MAN DROWNED IN HARBOUR (New Zealand Preu Auoeiationj AUCKLAND, August 22. A man was drowned at Whangaroa at midnight on Saturday. He was: Thomas George Fleming, aged 64, of Totara North. Mr Fleming had taken four friends from Whangaroa down the harbour in his outboard motor-boat. After returning to Whangaroa, the four passengers disembarked, and Mr Fleming intended to return to Totara North. As the men did not hear the engine start, they investigated, and saw the dinghy, drifting away without its occupant. The police were notified, and a search was made. Mr Fleming’s body was recovered this morning.
