UNIVERSITY SKI TOURNAMENT

EVENTS AT TEMPLE BASIN The New Zealand University ski tournament ended on Friday at Temple Basin. The Canterbury University College team won the Malcolm Mace Memorial trophy for the best men’s slalom teairi,' the Ferrier trophies for the winning men’s and women’s teams, and the Kirk trophy tor the winning team. The slalom event, consisting of 35 gates over a vertical descent of 500 ft, was run in fine weather last Wednesday on packed powder snow. The Otago team lost its chances when its two best men, A. Duff > and M. Laird, were disqualified for missing a pair of gates. Twenty-one men and nine women competed, each having two runs over the course. The controlled downhill event was held on Friday over a course of about a mile and a half, with a vertical drop of 1600 ft. The top half of the course was soft powder snow, and the bottom half was hard Ice. Conditions deteriorated later tn the afternoon, and the' women’s events had to be cancelled.
