ARMY EXERCISE STUDIED

OFFICERS AT BURNHAM Territorial officers from as far afield as Nelson. Greymouth, and south d Dunedin attended an indoor cloth* model exercise at Burnham Military Camp during the weekend. The exercise was arranged by the 3rd Infantry Brigade primarily for officeri of its three battalions —the Ist Canterbury, the Ist Nelson, Marlborough, and West Coast, and the Ist Otag<( Southland Regiments—so that they will know better what will be required of them when their formationi have to execute a similar exercise ia the field during their ‘annual camps at Lake Tekapo m the summer. Officers of supporting arms—artillery, armoured corps, engineers, and medical—were also invited to see the exercise, which was to study a set piece attack based on a night attack followed by a day attack requiring the .crossing of a major obstacle, including a minefield. The exercise was under the direction of the brigade commander, Brigadier ,H. H. Parata. and it wu conducted { by .the brigade major, Major R. H. Griggs, assisted by other members of the brigade staff and staff officers of Southern Military District Headquarters of the New Zealand Division was represented at the exerefee by a general staff office Major R. M. Gurr.
