SECURITY CASES IN U.S.

Bill To Defeat Fifth Amendment Passed (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 11. The United States Senate today approved and sent to the White House for signature a measure permitting immunity from prosecution to be granted to witnesses who testify in internal security cases. The bill represents a key feature in the Administration’s anti-subver-sive programme. The legislation is designed to defeat accused persons in Communist investigations and trials who cite the Fifth Amendment to avoid answering questions.

It would compel testimony against suspected spies and traitors from persons who otherwise would Invoke the Fifth Amendment as protection against possible self-incrimination. The measure gives the Federal Courts the power to grant' immunity. It would apply • to Congressional hearings and Court trials, but would be limited to national security cases involving Reason, espionage, sabotage, and other forrrft of subversion.
