U.S. AIRLINE BUYS BRITISH PLANES
Order For 37 Vickers Viscounts n *• .- LONDON, August 11. Capital Airlines, one of the United gates largest internal airlines, is to Joy Vickers Viscount propellerturbine airliners, in addition to three already bought, it was announced in London today. This brings the airline’s total order for Viscounts up to 40, costing an estimated 45.000.000 dollars. The American company has also taken an option on a further 20 Viscounts, which Mr G. R. Edwards, man-aging-director of Vickers-Armstrong’s aircraft division, said today should •Iso soon become a firm order. Mr Edwards said that this was the biggest single pale ever made of a British airliner, and it was believed to be the largest single commercial dollar export order ever placed with a British company for any commodity manufactured and assembled in Britain. The contract for the 37 aircraft was rigned last week. This latest order brings the number of Viscounts sold so far to 143. with options taken on a further 24. Buyers include airlines in Australia, France, •nd Canada. Mr Edwards said the total value of inn orders for Viscounts now •mounted to £41,000,000.
