Different Conditions For Trentham Meeting Today

RACING

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, July 16. | Trentham had rain last night and it has changed the state of the going for the concluding day of the Wellington winter meeting tomorrow. The rain will have loosened what was a sticky track, and the change could make much of the earlier form : valueless. Horses well up in the weights were anchored in the going on Monday and Wednesday, but the track tomorrow will not make such heavy demands on their toughness and ability. The change in the ground is not ex-j pected to trouble Dormant, which may improve a good record by winning the Winter Oats, the first leg of the double. Elixir, Dormant’s conqueror in the Parliamentary Handicap, is versatile ; enough to run well again with looserl footing, and Topmast should be just about at his peak for his attempt to win the race for the second time. Prince Regent, one of the early favourites for the Onslow Handicap, is not completely fit He has a bruised foot. I and is not a certain starter. If Prince Regent drops out of the field, there will be a stronger demand for Pharoah's Castle, which scored an improver’s third placing on Wednesday, and for the Whyte Handicap winner. Hinuler. Himiler is well up in the weights now, but his 9-5 may not keep him out of the money. The top weight, Curzon, is quite ■ likely to make more improvement than any of the others, now that rain has

loosened the track. He is a high-class galloper at his best, and this field is not strong. Delayed stopped to a walk in the sprint on the first day, and tired badly in the sticky going after trailing to the straight. The change in the conditions will make him a more formidable opponent for the North Island sprinters tomorrow. Sanford strengthens the chance of a success for the light-weights He should be improved by his race in the Whyte Handicap, as he had a slight setback and missed some work before the meeting. Riddiford Steeples Fox Fun and the Wellington Steeplechase winner. Lay Off, are the early favourites for the Eric Riddiford Steeplechase. The shorter distance should suit Fox Fun. A dashing fencer with good speed. Fox Fun may go to Riccarton for the Grand National next month. The best should be seen of him there, as he has shown his best form when the going is good. Solar Mist holds his place as prepost favourite for the Winter Hurdles. He comes from the powerful J. Waller stable, which has lost the services of two good winners over country. Personality and Song of India, through unsoundness this winter. Solar Mist winner of the Great Northern Hurdles last month, has done much to compensate for the stable’s bad luck with its steeplechasers, and his great stamina should carry him into the fight for the big money tomorrow. Cabana, last year’s winner of this race, and the well-performed Silver Archer, may be the pick of the others, though they may have little to spare from horses with the ability of Canadian, Indian Scholar. Sonloch and Opposition. The South Island has only one runner- Reproof, in the Winter Hurdles. He may do best of the light-weights if he goes generously, but he is moody. Chances of success for the South Island look brightest in the hack races. The Riccarton-trained Beaverbrook may be the strongest favour**" the meeting in the Kia Ora Handicap. He finished brilliantly for his close second behind Pahoro over a mile last Monday. Over 11 furlongs tomorrow, he appears to have a first-class chance because the extra ground will suit him' Selections:—
