TUNNEL UNDER MT. BLANC

The Italian Chamber of Deputies today unanimously ratified the French and Italian Convention for building the world’s largest road tunnel—a two-way road more than seven miles long under . Mt. Blanc (15,782 ft Europe’s highest mountain. The convention for building the tunnel—which has been talked of since the eighteenth century and has been a definite project for the last 50 years —was signed in Paris in 1953. The French Parliament has not yet ratified it. The tunnel would constitute a great new European road artery open all the year round and would provide the shortest route between Paris and Rome. The tunnel would cut through the solid granite of Mt. Blanc. It is expected to take about four years to build at a cost of £9,500.000.
