COMPULSORY STOPS
Sir, —The Traffic Department is to be commended for making so many crossings on to a main road as compulsory stops. A noteworthy one is the road down from St. Andrews Hill to the Ferry bridge. A street of greater potential danger is St. Johns street, where it crosses the Canal Reserve. The crossing before this. Dyers road, which is not nearly as bad, is marked. We travel this road every day, and have seen several accidents at the St. Johns street crossing, and nearly every day there is a near accident. Vision is absolutely restricted by trees and gorse fences. I sincerely hope this will be attended to. —Yours, etc.. CAREFUL MOTORIST. July 9, 1954. [ M We thank the correspondent for his remarks,” said Mr H. W. Birdling, assistant traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council, when this letter was referred to him. ’‘Before we could erect a compulsory stop sign at St Johns street, the department had to resurface the road sp that the necessary road markings could go down in conjunction with the sign. Erection of the sign will be completed today.”!
