ATHLETES LEAVE FOR EMPIRE GAMES
MISS YVETTE WILLIAMS’S PLANS (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 14. Miss Yvette Williams, Olympic and British Empire Games ■ broad jump champion, is unlikely to compete for New Zealand at the 1956 Olympic Games at Melbourne. She left Auckland by air today with 29 other members and officials of the New Zealand team which is to compete in the 1954 British Empire Games at Vancouver. Before she left Miss Williams said: “I have no definite pans for the future. I will probably rest for a few months when we return from the games.” When questioned about her training schedule for the next Olympic Games, she laughed and said: “I hardly think it likely I will be competing at Melboure. They are not on for another two and a half years.” Many officials, relatives and supporters were at Whenuapai today to say farewell to the team. The remainder of the team will leave by air on Saturday afternoon. Today’s group consisted mainly of southern members of the team. The plane will carry the team to Nandi, where, after a stop of about six hours, its members will transfer to a SuperConstellation for the flight to Vancouver, with stops at Canton Island, Honolulu, and San Francisco.
