NEW FACTORY AT HORNBY
MANUFACTURE OF WATER MAINS PLANS OF AUCKLAND FIRM The manufacture of high-pressure water mains for the South Island market is to be undertaken in Christchurch by an Auckland firm which plans to erect a factory on a site of six acres and a half at Hornby. This is announced in the latest issue of the “New Zealand Manufacturer.” The firm’s Auckland factory, -built only 16 years ago, now covers 100,000 square feet, and the space is taxed to the utmost, the article says. The logical step, it states, was to establish a South island plant. By manufacturing water mains on the spot, it would eliminate expensive shipping of mains between the islands, facilitating and making cheaper supplies for the South Inland, the firm builds its water mains in 4inch, 6-inch, and 9-inch internal diameters, and so far it has supplied nearly 13,000 miles of these pipes in New Zealand and Australia.
“Initially the Christchurch plant will be about the size of the main section of the Auckland works, although detailed areas have yet to be settled,” the article states. TA staff of about 40 will be needed, of whom all but two or three key men will be recruited in Christchurch. Later the factory will be extended to cope with the manufacture of corrugated roofing, flat sheets, sidings, ridgings, flashings, ventilators, and similar equipment for the building trade.”
