MATHEMATICS AS A PASTIME
Sir,—l would like tp correct a statement made by a reporter of “The Press” concerning the meeting of the Sixth Forms Mathematics Society held on Friday evening. In Saturday’s issue of your paper it was stated that the problem “The sum of Bill’s and John’s ages is 72. Bill is three times as old as John was when Bill was half as old as 'John will be four years before he is four times as old as Bill was when Bill was seven times as old as John,” was worked by a confident lad. This problem was in truth worked by a girl, which shows girls too are interested in mathematics as a pastime. However, I feel sure that we all appreciate the publicity given to the Sixth Forms Mathematics Society by your paper.—Yours, etc., A MATHEMATICAL GIRL. June 14, 1954.
