WINTER TOURNAMENT
The Canterbury College team met North Linwood I in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s winter competition on Saturday. The match between P. M. Wilson (Canterbury College) and B. R. Crawford (North Linwood), both Canterbury ranked players, lasted two hours and a half. Wilson came near to winning when he took the first set and established a good lead in the next. Results:— Linwood Avenue v. North Linwood II Singles.—H. Blackburn beat M. Urquhart, 6-3, 6-3; J. Southam beat K. Baker, 6-2, 6-2; T. Rogal beat K. Newman, 6-1, 6-1; Hughes lost to T. Harneiss. 4-6, 6-8. Doubles.—Blackburn and Hughes beat Urquhart and Baker, 6-0, 6-0; Southam and Rogal v. Newman and Harneiss, 5-7 (unfinished). Linwood Avenue won by 4 matches to 1. North Linwood I v. Canterbury College Singles.—B. R. Crawford beat P. M. Wilson, 3-6, 8-6, 6-3; E. S. McCormack beat C. Tippins, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4; M. J. Beatty lost to A. Wilson, 3-6, 6-0, 5-7; R. R. Innes beat S. Clay, 6-2, 6-1. Doubles.—Crawford and Cormack v. P. Wilson and Tippins, 6-3, 3-6 (unfinished); Beatty *and Innes beat A. Wilson and Clay, North Linwood I won by 4 matches to 1. Avonside v. Linwood Singles.—B. Mills lost to B. Crofts, 4-6, 6-8; F. Commons beat D. Huston, 6-1, 6-2; G. Price lost to G. Baker, 6-8, 8-10; N. Bouterey lost to W. T. Spence. 3-6, 4-6. Doubles.—Mills and Commons lost to Crofts and Huston, 1-6, 6-8; Price and Bouterey beat Baker and Spence. 6-2, 6-1. Linwood won by 4 matches to 2.
