THEFTS FROM BOTANIC GARDENS

Sir, —The person who removed plants from the Botanic Gardens committed a crime against the community, which is infinitely more serious than one against the individual. By failing to make a public statement on this affair, the head of the reserves committee is thereby discouraging patriotic citizens from reporting this and similar instances of plundering which may come to their notice. If the culprit is mentally defective, the people should be informed of the facts, and thus allay suspicion cast upon all who find pleasure in visiting our public gardens and perhaps on those employed therein. It is to be hoped that your paper will not let this matter rest until a worthwhile official statement is forthcoming.—Yours, etc., MUZZLED. June 7, 1954.
