SECOND DAY AT ASHBURTON

BRACKET FAVOURED IN STAKES LUCKYLAST SHOULD WIN AGAIN Royal Minstrel and La Mignon, which between, them have won four of the five two-year-old events decided in the South Island, will form a formidable bracket in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, the main race on the final day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting today. The bracket is likely to be the shortestpriced favourite in the history of the race. Royal Minstrel and La Mignon stand out among the horses of their ages this season and, unless they make mistakes, they should finish first and second The most difficult for them to beat may be the Whipster filly, Lady Vai. Another filly, Dresden Lady, should also race well. The other colts and geldings have not made the progress exacted of them in recent weeks and they do not make much appeal. The best of them may be Free Agent, First Atack, and Amen Ra.

Lucky Last, winner of her three races since being trained ip Canterbury, should have little difficulty in winning again in the Ashburton County Handicap. All her wins have been decisive.

Most opposition to her may come from Lindy Lou, Camdon, Scottish Note, Waihi Princess, and Fair Annette.

i Most of the fields are similar to those of Saturday, Shd form on the ’ first day should be a reliable guide. The weather has been fine at Ashburton over the week-end, and the : track should! again provide first-class s going. The double will be run on the Ashburton County Handicap and the Acton ■ Handicap.
