FIRST DAY AT HUTT PARK

CHIEF LOCHIEL WINS HANDICAP

**The Press’* Special Service WELLINGTON, June 6. Chief Lochiel, which has run some of his best races at Hutt Park, finished brilliantly to win the R. A. Armstrong Handicap, the first leg of the double, at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday. The first three favourites, Lassoloc, Gay Heritage and Te Koi were unplaced. Lassoloc covered a little extra ground, but otherwise had every chance. Gay Heritage and Te Koi were badly placed early, and finished fast when clear for fourth and sixth respectively.

The second leg, the Port Nicholson Handicap, was won by Martini, and the combination paid £493 9s 6d for £l.

The day was fine and cold, and the track in perfect order. There was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £62,060 10s, an increase of £6593 15s, compared with the first day last year. Armstrong Handicap Chief Lochiel, Paramount, Relight, Affable, and King’s Order made a poor beginning in the R. A. Armstrong Handicap, but after three furlongs Chief Lochiel was sharing the lead with Modern Star. Sea Rover reached the front after six furlongs, and was followed into the back the last time by Chief Lochiel, Logan Fame, Modern Star, Hallstand, and Crafty Guy. Affable moved up to share the lead with Sea Rover with three furlongs to go. They were just clear of Logan Fame, Chief Lochiel, Crafty Guy, Modern Star, and Eileen Lillian. Affable ran on well, but was outsprinted at the end by Chief Lochiel, which beat him by a length. Crafty Guy was right up, third, just beating Gay Heritage and Sea Rover. Then came Te Koi, Spring Edition, and Lassoloc, with a gap to Relight and Defiance. Martini, with a perfect trail all the way, overhauled Nil Desperandum at the finish of the Port Nicholson Handicap, to win going away. Nil Desperandum tried to make all the pace, and his effort was a good one. Pennyfare was a moderate third, after being handy enough in the final round. Bonnie Castle finished well back, fourth. Annie Laurie broke at the start; so did the bracketed pair, Virtuous and Gold Light. Gold Light was pulled up. The favourite, Dalise, began slowly, and covered a little extra ground. The others found the distance too far.

L Au Revolr Handicap f Rapid Rival and Magic Mist were checked at the start of the Au Revoir Handicap. Ductile and Barney Dillon broke. Irish Flax, Quite Obvious, and Grattan Bay failed to start on terms. Tarzan Grattan tried to slip the field half a mile from the finish, and at one stage was six lengths clear. He was eased slightly near the end, and Master Tony finished strongly, to beat, him by a nose. Con Scott ran past the beaten horses for third, ahead of Vera Scott and Terowie.

Regulus, which finished third in the Rongotai Handicap, for trotters, was disqualified for pacing, and Lothario was promoted to third. A. W. Broughton, who drove Regulus, was fined £l5 for not bringing the horse back to the correct 3 ait. Starting later in the Randwick Hanicap. Regulus Was pulled up at the end of half a mile. The horse’s performance was investigated by the stipendiary stewards, who were given an undertaking that Regulus w 2J d< L not be started on the second day. D. G. Jones was questioned about the performances of Gold Light, and was warned that if improvement was not shown action would be taken. D. C. Jessop, driver of Brighton’s Wonder, winner of the Navy Handicap, was fined £2 for undue use of the whip. Results:— RONGOTAI HANDICAP, Of £3OO. 3min 58sec class.
