HACK STEEPLES AT WINGATUI

BORDER REIVER WINS (From 6ur Own Reporter) . , DUNEDIN, June 6. Border Reiver made a winning start as a steeplechaser at his second attempt in the Tahuna Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Wingatui today. He ran to the front at the end of six furlongs, and his pace and safe ■jumping kept him clear of the others after that. He won as he liked by 12 lengths from the top-weight. Chasemint, which led a vain chase after him over the last round. Riverstone improved with the change in the going to finish third, but it was a plodder’s performance. His jumping was not.even, out he dodged serious mistakes, and beat a poor lot home. Baygundi was a weak fourth. He was hard ridden a long way from home, and could make no impression. The only others to finish were Mystify and Shanks Pony. Ironside, a. well-backed Washdyke horse, ran off at the water jump the first time round, and Silent Sol also dived off at this fence after leading early. Black Tartan ran off at the second of the brush double in the back straight the last time round, and Bon Chale was pulled up when well beaten.

Border Reiver is a five-year-old brown horse by Royal Chief from Parvati, trained, by J. C. McKerrow, of Oamaru, for Mr A. Grant. He is closely related to a good steeplechaser, Padishah, and comes from the same family as the great race mare Cuddle. . t . Flying Feet’s Success A Riccarton two-year-old. Flying Feet, won the Trial Stakes at false odds for a filly which had made a promising debut at Amberley a week earlier. She ran the race out gamely, reached the front inside the furlong, and beat Sir Gerald by a neck. Flying Feet races in the same colours as Surprise Ending, and has been nominated for classic races in Australia next season. Carol York was the leader until Flying Feet headed her, and she weakened to third, but the judge put Carol York’s number up as the winner, and did not change it for a few mohients. Sir Gerald ran the race out well for a good second, after trailing on the home turn. Carol York was two lengths back third, and Double Ray made up ground for fourth, a neck back. Gazette was a nose away, fifth. Hurdles to Tenner Tenner, a six-year-old half-sister to Hush Money, the best South Island twp-year-old this season, easily won the Greenfield Hurdles. Putting in a long run from well back to take charge on the turn, she never gave the others a chance after reaching the front, and won by two lengths from Culton. which, under a hard ride, beat Conrad by a head. St. Truin made up ground to beat the weakening Black Wealth for fourth. The Tongs jumped to the front at the mile, and was still in front when he fell at the secorfd to last hurdle, bringing down Magical and checking Some Bounder. Boniface was lucky to stay in the race. He dipped badly at the first flight, and lost a lot of ground. He improved slightly, finishing eighth, alongside the top-weight, Ash, which was bracketed with Conrad. Wayren Succeeds Dutch Flag attempted to lead all the way in the Brighton Handicap, but Wayren and Copperfield both finished too strongly for him. Wayren was well ridden by W. D. Skelton, who had the In-vercargill-trained Sir Galloway gelding handy on the inner all the way. Wayren was handy in a bunch behind Dutch Flag and. Green Island at the halfmile. Also in this bunch were Copperfield and Brooke. Defeated and Red Admiral were also handy, the latter having shown speed after beginning slowly. Copperfield came strongly down the outer to close on Dutch Flag near flfie furlong, and looked a winner for > moment, but then Wayren dashed through, and Copperfield could not beat him.

Dutch Flag was unchallenged for third, three lengths clear of The Poacher. Red Admiral did well to finish fifth, and White Satin made up ground for sixth. Wayren is trained at Invercargill by J. A. Rowland for Mr T. E. H. Godfrey. This was his second win.

Abbot’s Choice Improves Abbot’s Choice showed improved form to lead all the way in the St. Clair Handicap. Locherbie was the only one to get near him in the straight, but Abbot’s Choice won by the handy margin of two lengths and a half, Locherbie might have closed that margin, but his jockey lost his whip inside the first furlong. A minor feature of the race was the performance of the top-weight, Cheerio, to get up for third. This Invercargilltrained Baffles gelding appeared to be hopelessly placed at the half-mile, and his powerful run under 9-12 was an effort of considerable merit.

Fourth, only a head back, was Evening Shoes, which with anything like a good run would have improved on the placing. Solstice and Balveine did best of the Riccarton horses, and finished sixth and seventh respectively.
