FIRST DAY AT AUCKLAND

SOLAR MIST WINS HURDLES

OUTSIDER SURPRISES IN HANDICAP “The Press” Special Service : -. r AUCKLAND, June 6. An Awapuni jockey, J. P. Carter, and an - Awapuni horse won toe Great Northern Hurdles for th© second successive year on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting yesterday. The winner was Solar Mist, a five-year-old gelding owned by Mrs J. Howell and Mr R. E. Johnson. , Last year. Carter won on Coppice, which was trained by L. Knapp. Solar Mist is prepared by J. J. Waller. In hard, muscular condition. Solar Mist outstayed his 14 opponents. He did not look like making a mistake, and set a race record- of 4min 34 3-ssec—a wonderful gallop over two miles and a half and 10 flights. The previous record was Esperance Bay’s time of 4min 37sec, in 1941. Solar Mist finished full of running. He began the last furlong two lengths behind toe pacemaker, Shangola, which blundered, and came through to win by four lengths. Cotswold was second, two lengths ahead of Silver Archer, which, just beat The McDoaough for third.

A plain brown gelding, Solar Mist was bred by Mr T. C. Lowry, by Lambourn (by Bulandshar) from the Imported English mare, Solar Metal (Raeburn — Platinum), he was bought by the Wanganui trainer, K. R. Webster for 120 guineas at the national yearling sales in 1950. As a two-year-old, Solar Mist was not tried as a racehorse, and he was unplaced in five attempts when three. He came to form almost immediately when raced over hurdles as a four-year-old. For spring racing in 1952, he was raced by Mrs Howell with Mr R. E. Johnson, and in the autumn last year, he entered Waller’s stable.

Altogether, Solar Mist has had 23 starts for six wins, three seconds and a third, and.£44QQ. , . Staying is Solar Mist’s long suit. He should be prominent at Trentham next month, when the ground is generally very The weather was mild for winter, and the ground excellent until near the end, when it became greasy with rain. The attendance was 39,000, compared with 28,000 on toe first day last year. The totalisator on-course handled £!”.?,581 10s (including £34,703 on doubles), against £229,099 15s on the first day last year.

Solar Mist’s Success The McDonough, Silver Archer, Gallant Robin, Cabana and Cotswold ran fast in close order to the first fence in the Great Northern Hurdles. Balagmore quickly tailed off.

Gallant Robin was nearly down at the first fence end dropped ./his rider, and Cotswold rah clear into the back after three furlongs from Shangola, Cabana, Cogitation, The McDonough, and Sleepy Duke. Two lengths behind was Silver Archer, then came Master . Qrelio and Tower dock.

When the field passed the stands again, with about nine furlongs to run, Sleepy Duke; Cotswold; and Shangola were the leaders from Cabana, The McDonough, Silver Archer, Cogitation, Solar Mist, and Canadian.

Gallant Robin ran riderless in front of Sleepy Duke and Shangola as they went past the six furlongs. Cotswold was two lengthsfurther back; then came The McDonough, Silver Archer, and Solar MiaL Near «he half-mile, Sleepy Duke shortened stride quickly, and Shangola sprinted clear. He was soon three lengths ahead of Cotswold. Solar Mist ran strongly past The McDonough into third, and Silver Archer and Canadian were next. The others had no chance. Shangola ran to toe straight two lengths ahead of Solar Mist, which continued his run past Cotswold. Shangola bungled the last hurdle. Solar Mist came strongly to the front. He was much too good for the others in the run home, and won by four lengths Irom Cotswold. Silver Archer was two lengths further back, third. The McDonough wilted into fourth, and Shangola was fifth. Then can.e There was a big gap to Master Orello, Cogitation, Balagmore, Dlnkum. Sleepy Duke and Cabana.
