ACCIDENTS WITH TRACTORS

EDUCATIONAL FILM PROPOSED

Concern at the increasing number of farm accidents involving tractors was expressed at the annual conference of the North Canterbury provincial executive of Federated Farmers yesterday by Mr C. G. Gardnei- when he was reporting for the district’s agricultural section. He suggested that in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture a series of slides or films should be produced so that farmers could see how tractor accidents were caused.

Only that day while travelling down to the conference from Waiau, Mr Gardner said, he had seen an example of a dangerous practice. A farmer was feeding out hay from a trailer drawn by a tractor. The tractor, with no-one at the controls was moving across the paddock and beside the farmer on the trailer was his small daughter. In these circumstances it was conceivable that there could be a tragedy if the child fell off and even a double tragedy. Mr Gardner said he had done the same thing himself, but it should not be done.
