FIGHTING IN ANNAM

(Rec. 7 p.m.) HANOI, May 3. Fierce fighting has broken out near the Central Annam coast, midway between the threatened Red river delta and the southern region around Saigon, where the rebels struck two days ago.

A marauding Vietminh regiment, several thousand strong, swooped down from the Kontum Pleiku plateau yesterday to submerge the Vietnamese units guarding the approaches to the port of Tuyhoa. This area was cleared of rebels in January, and some of the French forces there are believed to have been withdrawn to other threatened areas in Indo-China. One Vietminh force, estimated at more than 2000 men, swept down from the mountains and overwhelmed two companies of a Vietnamese light battalion in a temporary camp at Cung son. 20. miles inland from Tuyhoa. Other rebel troops attacked another Vietnamese company which managed to withdraw into the fortified post of Bunaerieng, nearby. A fresh attack was launched against the post, but the Vietnamese repelled it.

Two Vietnamese companies a few miles north of Tuyhoa clashed with a strong Vietminh force, and routed them with artillery support. They killed or wounded 40 rebels and captured 10, the French command said tonight. Other areas were reported quiet.
