HURUNUI LICENSING COMMITTEE
“SATISFACTORY POSITION” REVEALED A satisfactory position had been revealed, said the chairman (Mr F. F. Reid S.M.) at the annual meeting of the Hurunui Licensing Committee at Rangiora yesterday. He was commenting on the report on the conduct of hotels in the district. Sergeant G. Urquhart represented the police. Transfers of licences were granted as follows:—Sefton, Stanley R. Ihle to Gerald Lloyd; Rotherham, Margaret Mortimer to Ronald M. Sutherland: Red Lion (Rangiora), John Stewart Carswell to Arthur Joseph Deyell. New licences were issued as follow*:—Rotherham, Ronald M. Sutherland; Cust, Robert R. Rothwell- Red Lion (Rangiora), Arthur J. Deyell; Sefton, G. Lloyd- Belfast, Darcy A. Uren; Hurunui, Gerald J. Barnard; Kaikanui (Kaiapoi), Irme E. Brown. Renewals of publicans’ licences were granted as follows:—Railway (Amberley), Leo A. Kotlowski; Royal (Woodend), Arthur R. James; The Lodge (Hanmer), Dedric R. A. de Jetley; Great Northern (Waikari), G. J. Traill; Junction (Rangiora), John G. Burgoyne; Pier (Kaiapoi), Thomas J. Hendren; Waipara, Hector T. Prebble; New Ashley, Noel F. Gillespie; Masonic (Southbrook), James McClung; Culverden, Beatrice L. Gudsell; Mandeville (Kaiapoi), Richard H. Bates; Royal (Leithfield), Terence E. Charles R. Alexander (Kaiapoi) was granted a renewal of a wine seller’s licence. Basil A. Fitzpatrick and Company, Ltd. (Rangiora), was granted a renewal of a wholesale licence.
“They got in by the skin of their teeth,” said the chairman, when it was reported that work on. necessary alterations at the Junction Hotel had started this week. The work would have to be done by December 4, he added, otherwise the committee must give consideration to the suspension of the licence.
In granting a renewal of the licence for the Harewood Arms Hotel, the chairman said that the committee took the view 'that substantial improvements could be carried out to the bar.
