INTER-ISLAND STEAMER
SUNDAY SERVICE SUGGESTED
No-one, be he or she on business or on a holiday visit, could spend a full week-end in the North or South Island by using the steamer-express service, said Mr R. C. Neville at a meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. He asked that the chamber should approach the Union Steam Ship Company, seeking a Sunday night service instead of the present Saturday service.
He could see no difficulty about cargo, said Mr Neville, as it was now loaded on Saturday. Most first-class mail now went by air, but any delay in mail from the south of the South Island would be offset by a quicker delivery of mail from the north. “What about racehorses?” asked one member.
“You seem to have forgotten about the Ranfurly Shield,” said another. Mr L. C. Warren, branch manager of the Union Company, said that Friday and Saturday nights were probably the busiest nights for passengers. However, he would like time to consider the suggestion.
The meeting decided to ask the company to consider the use of a Sunday service in lieu of a Saturday one..
