CANTERBURY TO PLAY BULLER
RUGBY FOOTBALL
FAST GAME LIKELY AT WESTPORT
(From. Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, June 4.
The first of this season s home and away fixtures between CamerDury and be played at Westport tomorrow, wul be me first occasion on «vnicn Canterbury, as the holder or the rcanitiriy Shield, and Buller, as holder of tne beddon shield, nave met. Unlike last year, when Canterbury had a runaway win of 40-8, bullet is expected to provide tough opposition. The ground at Victoria square is in exceuent order, and it the weather nolds, as it is expected to do, fast, open Kugby—the type that is played by both teams —should be seen. Added interest in the match is given by tne presence of Mr A. E. Marslin, a New Zealand and South Island selector, who, while on this Queen s Birthday week-end visit to the West Coast, will have the opportunity of seeing Canterbury, Buller and West Coast players. Several of tnese are very liKely prospects for the South Island team to play the North Island at T Lancaster Park on July 19. Tomorrow, Canterbury will field a strong set of backs, which includes the All Blacks M. J. Dixon and D. D. Wilson. The youthful, though very enterprising B. Columbus, will make his debut in senior representative Rugby outside P. J. Creedy. The meeting between the ever-improving R. Smith, a very likely contender for South Island honours this year, and Buller’s R. Burrow, who has shown very good form lately, should prove interesting. Added thrust in the Canterbury backs will be given by A. W. McPherson, at centre.
The Canterbury pack for tomorrow is something of an unknown quantity. Four new players—R. Wells, R. Cochrane, A Chirnside and A. Bellamore — are included in the pack. For this match, Chirnside, an excellent jumper, Cochrane, and N. T. Teague, will bear the brunt of line-out work. For the first time since the end of the Second World War the Buller veteran forward, W. Mumm, will not be turning but against Canterbury. Patrons of Lancaster Park at the Ranfurly Shield match against Buller last year will remember Mumm’s wonderful work in the loose. He will be sadly missed from the Buller team this year. The teams are:— Buller.—P. Mumm; R. Burrows, J. McArthur, B. White; T. Hawes, A. Forsythe; C. Tregurtha; B. Corrie, P. Powley. JShaw, M. Ryan, A. Hawes, J. Cockfield, T. Anderson, V/. Craddock. Canterbury.—K. C. Stuart; R. Smith, A. W. C. McPherson, M. J. Dixon; D. D. Wilson, B. Colombus; P. J. Creedy; R. Wells, N. Teague, R. Cochrane, A. Chirnside, E. Hem, P. Eastgate, D. Young, A.
