GOLF

LONDON, June 3. New Zealand lost its match with Canada by 5 games to 4 in the Royal and Ancient Golf Club’s bicentenary Commonwealth tournament over the old course at St. Andrews. The two countries shared the foursomes with 1| games each but Canada took the singles by 3i games to 2£. The outcome of the contest depended on the match between the New Zealander, Tom Jeffery, and Doug Silverberg. Jeffery three-putted on the eighteenth to lose 1 down. He had also lost the seventeenth through driving out of bounds.

In the second match Great Britain and Australia retained their unbeaten records in the tournament, halving their match at 4J games, each sharing both the foursomes and the singles. The New Zealanders were a very tired bunch of golfers when they walked off the course. They have played without a break for days on end. Their weariness showed itself today in the number of driving and putting slips made by most of the players. The champion, Tim Woon, lost his singles by 2 and 1 to Nick Weslock, but should not have been beaten. He was 1 down when he reached the fifteenth green with a lovely mashie second, while Weslock was bunkered in 2. The Canadian came out of the trap a yard from the pin and won the hole to go to 2 up when Woon three-putted, finally missing from barely two feet. Woon again three-putted to concede a half in 5 at the sixteenth, after Weslock bunkered his drive. Although Woon got a birdie 4 at the long seventeenth, Weslock holed a single putt for .the necessary half for victory. Jones Suffers Lapses Stewart Jones, who halved with Donald Doe, also suffered lapses towards the end. He had been 2 up at the ninth, was still 1 up with three holes to play, but skied his drive to lose the sixteenth. He hit another poor tee shot, but got his half at the seventeenth to remain on terms, and was very pleased to snatch a half at the last. Bryan Silk, playing good golf, scored New Zealand’s first singles success by beating Walter McElroy. 3 and 2. He was brilliant during the outward half of 34, which gave him a four holes lead. His only mistake in the round was driving out of bounds to lose the long fourteenth. This success was quickly followed by another, when Ron Timms beat Bob Fleming, 3 and 2, in a tight match which was only marred by bad putting from the Canadian. They were level at the thirteenth, but while Timms scored scratch figures for the next three holes, Fleming three-putted to lose all and the match.

Tony Gibbs, the New Zealand captain, did not have a chance against Phil Farley, and was beaten 5 and 4. Woon and Silk played a magnificent part in the division of honours in the foursomes. They withstood a terrific onslaught by the Canadian pair—the Canadians were five less than fours for the first 12 holes and 3 up—and kept fighting back with determination and courage which won great admiration.

A birdie three won them the thirteenth, and when Canada crashed into a buhker at the long fourteenth, the New Zealanders regained another hole. At the next hole the New Zealanders got on terms. However, Weslock pla: cd a lovely little run up to win the seventeenth, and put his side dormie one. But the New Zealand pair scored a great birdie three on the home green—Silk hol-

ing a five yard putt to halve the match, Jeffery and Jones, combining splendidly, scored a great 4 and 2 win over Farley and Fleming after going out in 35 for a two holes lead. They won the tenth and also the twelfth with a birdie three to become 4 up, and although Jeffery drove out of bounds to lose the long fourteenth, they finished up in grand style with a birdie three at the sixteenth. But Timins and Gibbs failed to match the golf of their team mates and although they fought well, they were always on the losing end and finally lost 2 and 1 to Silverberg and Doe.
